Modern Kababaihan ng Malolos Lead Weaving Revival — Tradition + Science Under Mayor Natividad

QUEZON CITY — Carrying forward the historic legacy of the women of Malolos, today’s modern Kababaihan ng Malolos have stepped into the national spotlight as master weavers who blend ancestral artistry with science-backed innovation — all under the forward-looking leadership of Mayor Christian D. Natividad.

The city’s proud delegation represented the entire Region III (Central Luzon) at the Philippine Handloom Weaving Festival (PHWF) 2026, held September 18–20 at Quantum SkyView, Gateway Mall 2, Cubao, Quezon City. Leading the group were native Malolenyo artisans Arlene Datu and Mother Isidra Villafuerte, representing the collective Malikhaing Malolenyos. The event was organized by the DOST–Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI) under Executive Director Dr. Julius Leano.

Top Science Leaders Graced Opening Day

The significance of Malolos’ participation was underscored by the presence of key national officials on the festival’s first day, September 18:

– DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. — who emphasized how traditional crafts are being strengthened through modern science and technology

– DOST Region 3 Director Dr. Julius Caesar Sicat — who reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to uplifting local industries across Central Luzon

– DOST Bulacan Provincial Director Angie Parungao — whose tireless, hands-on support has been instrumental in bringing technical assistance, training, and resources directly to Malolos weavers

Their collective presence highlighted a shared vision: preserving Filipino heritage is not opposed to progress — it is advanced by it.

Tradition Woven with Science

Just as the historic women of Malolos stood for education, courage, and nation-building centuries ago, this new generation of weavers stands as a powerful symbol of progress — where age-old wisdom meets DOST-backed interventions for better quality, durability, and design innovation.

“The women of Malolos have always been pioneers — first in seeking education and freedom, now in reviving our craft with science,” Mayor Natividad stated. “We do not choose between tradition and progress. We weave them together. Through the support of DOST Secretary Solidum, Director Sicat, and our very own hardworking Provincial Director Angie Parungao, our weavers are not just keeping our heritage alive — they are building a modern, sustainable, dignified livelihood right here at home.”

Dedicated Facilities — Where Craft Flourishes

The program operates from two purpose-built hubs that bring stability, visibility, and professional growth to the artisans:

– Weaving Workshop & Training Center — Located on the second floor of the Senior Citizen Building, New City Hall Compound. Here, artisans receive continuous technical training, quality guidance, and access to improved looms and materials through DOST-PTRI support.

– Textile Showroom — Situated near the Malolos Sports and Convention Center, offering visitors and buyers a welcoming space to view and purchase authentic handwoven products directly from the makers.

From Local Loom to National Stage

Arlene Datu and Mother Isidra Villafuerte joined over 25 weaving communities from across the country, showcasing textiles that reflect Malolos’ distinct identity — enhanced by scientific advancements in fiber treatment, color consistency, and pattern preservation.

“Every thread we carry forward is strengthened by the support we receive,” said Arlene Datu. “With the guidance of DOST-PTRI, the leadership of Mayor Natividad, and the unwavering help of PD Angie Parungao, we are proving that our hands can build not just cloth, but a future for our families and our city.”
