MAYOR NATIVIDAD: MMDA TO ADOPT MALOLOS’ WASTE-TO-ENERGY, COASTAL DEFENSE SOLUTIONS FOR METRO MANILA

CITY OF MALOLOS, Bulacan — Mayor Atty. Christian D. Natividad expressed delight today, confirming that the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will replicate the city’s advanced waste-to-energy technology and innovative waste management system, as well as adopt nature-based coastal defense solutions across Metro Manila.

The announcement follows the recent official visit of MMDA General Manager Nicolas Torre to Malolos, where he personally inspected the city’s flagship environmental infrastructure and sustainable programs.

“We are very pleased to share that MMDA has recognized the effectiveness of our waste-to-energy technology and integrated waste disposal system. They will be duplicating this model throughout Metro Manila to address the growing solid waste crisis in the National Capital Region,” Mayor Natividad stated.

“Equally important — GM Torre and his team also committed to adopting our nature-based solutions for coastal defense. This approach protects shorelines, prevents flooding, and restores our ecosystems at the same time,” the Mayor added.

The Malolos model combines advanced thermal waste conversion that minimizes landfill reliance while generating usable energy, paired with eco-engineered coastal protection — such as mangrove belts, seagrass restoration, and bio-engineering structures — instead of purely concrete barriers. These innovations have significantly reduced flood risks and improved waste management efficiency in the city.

Mayor Natividad emphasized that the replication marks a milestone for local government-led innovation, and underscores Malolos’ role as a model for sustainable urban development in the country.

“This is not just a win for Malolos — it is a win for the entire National Capital Region and the environment. We are ready to share our expertise and best practices so that every Filipino can benefit from cleaner, greener, and more resilient communities.”
