46 Muslim PDL released during Ramadan

Muntinlupa City- “Meeting with Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang, Jr. at the National Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City. We discussed the Ramadan Executive Clemency, which I submitted to the President last August, 2023 and is now being reviewed by the Department of Justice, Board of Pardons and Parole and the Bureau of Corrections”.expressed Secretary Tillah. 

 On the press release today April 9, 2024, A total of 46 Muslim persons deprived of liberty have been released from the Bureau of Corrections since the start of Ramadan last March 10.

During the visit last April 4, 2024 afternoon by Presidential Adviser on Muslim Affairs, Almarim Centi Tillah to Bureau of Corrections Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. and asked about the condition of Muslim PDLs in different operating prisons and penal farms of the bureau.

BuCor Chief disclosed that based on their data, there are about 3,014 Muslim PDLs in various OPPF as of February 29, 2024, which is 5.69 percent out of 52,950 total number of PDLs under the watch of Bucor.

Of the said 3,014 Muslim PDLs 1,121 are confined at the New Bilibid Prison, 752 -Davao Prison and Penal Farm, 698 -San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm, 202 – Correctional Institution for Women, 144 – Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm, 81 – Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm and 16 – Leyte Regional Prison.

“Like any other PDLs, Muslims are allowed to practice their faith even inside the correction facilities. Our Muslim brothers are not left behind. In fact, 46 of them have already been released since the start of Ramadan, while another 23 have been recommended by the Board of Pardons and Parole for Executive Clemency as of April 3″ DG explained.

The 46 Muslim PDLs were released based on the following:

* 20 expiration of sentence

* 12 acquitted

* 5 RA 10592/ Turn over

Released Through Expiration of Maximum Sentence with Good Conduct Time Allowance and Turn Over if PDL has a pending case or subject for Rehab and Treatment Program

* 5 Probation

* 4 Granted Parole 

Since the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. there was 754 Muslim PDLs released. 

The family of PDL still waiting if there request be granted by the Director General to be with there family member in BuCor in the Eid Fitr celebration.
